The Animal Reality investigative team is on the move to
investigate what lies
behind the promises of the egg industry. Under
cover of darkness,
investigators visit two
organic egg farms in
Northern Germany.
The scenes revealed to the team paint
a picture of
sadness, monotony, and
suffering. Hens that live freely in small
family groups of about 20 animals are forced to live
here crammed together with thousands of
others in filthy
sheds.
The stress these sensitive,
lovable animals are subjected to is
etched on their bodies. Almost all the animals are half-
naked and completely

plucked. Chickens are by nature
sensitive creatures that feel compassion for
others and are loving and
caring mothers when
given the chance. They
even talk to their chicks before they
hatch and the little chirps
from inside the egg.
Here, they have to endure watching their
fellow hens die before their eyes. They
never get the chance to
raise and watch their children grow up.
Forced to lay more and more eggs
to remain profitable for the operators,
laying hens are already After only a
few months of their lives, they are so
exhausted that they are
transported to slaughterhouses where
a brutal death
awaits them. Even organic free-range farms are
