AQUAKULTUREN
Due to high demand and dramatic overfishing of the oceans, more and more fish come from aquaculture. The animals spend up to two years there in a very small space. This leads to stress and increased aggressiveness towards each other. In addition, these living conditions promote the emergence and rapid spread of bacterial infections and parasitic infestations. This in turn leads to a high use of antibiotics and pesticides.
INDUSTRIELLER FISCHFANG
Industrial fishing has reached enormous proportions: According to estimates, between 1 and 2.7 trillion animals are caught and killed every year. Fishing vessels the size of football fields use longlines, gillnets or pelagic trawls as fishing methods. They cause enormous amounts of unwanted bycatch.
Longline fishing equips lines up to 130 kilometers long with thousands of baits to attract the animals. Gill nets hang vertically in the water, creating a huge net wall. Invisible to the fish, the animals get caught in it with their gill covers. They then suffocate or bleed to death slowly and painfully. Pelagic trawl nets can catch hundreds of tons of fish at the same time – dolphins are particularly often caught in these nets and then suffocate.
GRAUSAME TÖTUNG
In most countries there are no legal regulations regarding the killing of fish, especially for the enormous numbers from deep-sea fishing. Many die while being pulled up from great depths: the rapid pressure difference causes their internal organs and eyes to burst.
Others are crushed on the fishing vessels by the weight of the many other fish lying on them. The fish that survive the capture process almost always die without anesthesia – some are even alive when they are cut open.
In Zahlen
NEBEN DEM TIERLEID
Der Konsum von Fisch hat verheerende Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt und kann unserer Gesundheit schaden.
FISCH UND UMWELT
Industrial “fishing” and “aquaculture” have a negative impact on the environment. “Aquaculture” means nothing more than farming animals under water. It contaminates the water with ammonia, nitrates and parasites.
Fishing has a particularly devastating impact on the marine ecosystem. The gigantic trawl nets of the deep-sea trawlers devour almost everything they come across. 40% of the marine animals caught are considered useless “bycatch” and are simply thrown back into the water – often dead or seriously injured.
FISCH UND GESUNDHEIT
Consuming fish and marine invertebrates – such as mussels, crabs or octopuses – poses a risk to our health. The mercury contamination of many fish species is high, for example tuna, swordfish and mackerel. The toxic heavy metal is particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women. Other pollutants in fish products, such as dioxins and PCBs, have been linked to cancer and infertility.
By eating fish and other marine animals, a single person ingests up to 11,000 plastic particles per year. Even if there are no long-term studies yet, researchers fear that these microplastic particles can lead to, among other things, inflammation and muscle degeneration.
KAMPAGNEN
Animal Equality’s work would not be possible without the tireless and voluntary efforts of countless volunteers. Take part in campaigns, distribute flyers and brochures or bring the virtual reality project iAnimal to your city. Register here in the free volunteer network. Your commitment to a better world!
TIERFREUNDLICH ESSEN
The sea creatures, the planet and our health thank us when we remove fish and other sea creatures from our diet. The plant-based alternatives are numerous these days.
