ARIWA – Massive Verstöße in der Schweinezucht

In einer umfangreichen Recherche von ARIWA wird über das systematische illegale Töten kleiner Ferkel und über schwere Verstöße gegen die Haltungsbestimmungen in zahlreichen deutschen Schweinezuchtbetrieben berichtet. Eine riesige Zucht- und Mastanlage in Sachsen-Anhalt sticht bei den Aufnahmen noch einmal besonders hervor. Abertausende Sauen vegetieren dort regelmäßig monatelang in so kleinen Käfigen, dass sie sich selbst mit angezogenen Beinen nicht in Seitenlage hinlegen können, ohne buchstäblich zwischen den Gitterstäben hervorzuquellen. Und das Pikante: Die Landesregierung von Sachsen-Anhalt weiß von diesen Zuständen, ohne das den Betreibern der Anlage als Mindestes sofort die Nachzucht neuer Ferkel untersagt worden wäre.

In 2014, Animal Rights Watch released
the most comprehensive current footage
from pig farms in
Germany, including images
from one of the largest farms in Europe.
Besides the everyday horrors
of pig farming, this facility
also documented massive and systematic
violations of
animal welfare regulations.
Further
investigations reveal how veterinary offices
turn a blind eye and that pig farming, at least
in this facility, appears to be a
lawless space.
These images from Saxony-Anhalt
come from one of Germany's largest pig
breeding and
fattening operations. A total of 5,500
sows, 2,200 gilts, 25,000 piglets, and
26,000 fattening pigs are kept here. Hidden
cameras prove that, even in this operation,
weak or undersized piglets are
beaten to death by employees immediately after birth. Hand-rearing these
animals would be too expensive and therefore not
profitable. A glance into the carcass containers of
this facility gives an idea of how many
animals
die here. Besides the everyday, yet
legally compliant, horrors of pig
breeding and fattening, these
recordings also document extensive, sometimes
massive, violations. The
animal welfare regulations for
livestock farming are violated, and even the minimum requirements stipulated in these regulations, which are in no way animal-friendly or species-appropriate, are not met here. Pregnant sows are systematically restrained well beyond their due date. Required enrichment materials are lacking, and many animals have no constant access to drinking water. The legally mandated minimum sizes for farrowing crates are also significantly
undercut. In the enormous halls of
this facility, this results in tens of thousands of individual violations.
Official inspections are failing
completely; violations go undetected
or unpunished. Even
the minimum legal requirements
are not implemented. For the pigs forced to
live here, this means
additional and considerable suffering day
after
day. Particularly alarming are the largely
structural violations of the animal
welfare regulations for livestock farming. These violations have been
known to the authorities and the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt for months, as
evidenced by a document from the state government
listing the numerous
violations.
Apparently, nothing is being done about it.
Hundreds of new piglets are born in this cruel
facility every day. Just in the fall of
2013, only a few months before
these current images were taken,
Animal Rights Watch reported massive
violations in a similarly large facility. A
pig breeding facility in Thuringia has been
uncovered; the failure of controls
is apparently a nationwide
and therefore general problem. Animal
Rights Watch has long criticized the fact
that effective control of
animal facilities that have reached a certain size is
not possible.
Inactive veterinarians are also repeatedly
criticized. Inadequate controls,
inactive authorities, and overwhelmed
veterinarians all contribute to the immense
suffering of the animals.
Animal Rights Watch has filed a
comprehensive criminal complaint with the
responsible public prosecutor's office.
It remains to be seen whether those
responsible for this horror will be held
accountable and what
consequences they will face.
Unfortunately, similar criminal cases have come to nothing
in the past.
