Every year in Spain, more than
16,000 festivals take place where animals are
tortured. Although this is rejected by a
large part of the population,
these festivals take place under the protection
of Spanish law and are
subsidized by EU funds. The animals, especially
young bulls and calves, are frightened,
injured, and suffer a long,
painful death. They are the focus
and victims of this cruel
spectacle. That's why
a team has
infiltrated such festivals for years and thus been able to
capture unprecedented images of cruelty and brutality.
So-called entharos are the most
common spectacles at local
festivals. A group of bulls,
oxen, or calves is imprisoned within the city
and chased by dozens of people
until they are killed in the marketplace or
in a bullfighting arena.
Fear and stress
overwhelm the animals, and they try to escape from the
crowd.
Often, the animals are
seriously injured in the process. They suffer
sprains and broken bones from slipping and slipping
and remain severely wounded.
There is no
veterinary care; the animals are left to die.

Especially in the countryside,
bullfighting is common. The animals are
chased across an open field by hundreds of people in cars, SUVs, or tractors. During this
spectacle, the bulls suffer
extreme stress and fear. They
desperately try to escape and
then collapse completely exhausted.
Sometimes they try
to hide among the trees
where they are pelted with stones until
they get up again. When the animals
fall to the ground from exhaustion, they are
killed with a shot to the head. And the brutality of
bullfighting doesn't end with the animals.

These people have
internalized violence to such an extent that it has become completely
normal at the festivals. The
participants not only attack the bulls
but also those who try to defend the animals.
The presence of children
at this spectacle was particularly surprising for the investigators. They
witness the horrific violence and are
often in
direct
danger themselves. One of the extreme The most
famous festival of cruelty is
the Toro de la Vega in
Torresas. Here, hundreds of mounted fighters chase
a bull, baiting it to

Animal Equality has documented these conditions
for years, allowing
us to prove the brutality of these
spectacles and raise public awareness
of the issue.
I will never forget the first time
we filmed in
Torresas. I had my
camera with me and was surrounded by a
frenzied crowd. After 15 minutes, when the
bull was already on the ground and almost dead,
someone jumped on the animal
and started to shout. Then there was a
group of fighters who claimed they had
won, but another group
claimed the same. They started arguing
and brutally attacked each other.
There was a huge commotion, and while all this was
happening, I watched the
animal, still dying,
while they argued about who had
won. I will never forget that,
and I believe that this
reflects the violence and senselessness of this tradition. The Toro de la Vega has become a Bullfighting has
become a symbol of the fight against animal cruelty in Spain. Every
year, the citizens' movement grows
relentlessly to put an end to bullfighting.
Investigators from Animal
Equality have also uncovered fights with young bulls. These spectacles
are held all over the country. The
toreros are beginners and practice killing
on young bulls that are not even 12
years old. Often,
the toreros make agonizing mistakes. The
bulls suffer a slow,
painful death.

Calves suffer similarly when
bullfighters practice on them. Animalless, they face
an angry mob.
They will
never reach their second year of life.
Lances are thrust into the animals again and again.
Fully
conscious and in immeasurable
pain, the animals die alone and

fear. Tradition does not justify the suffering of the animals and the
cruelty they have to endure.
It is time
to create a society where animal
cruelty has no place. You
